Martin Scorsese’s Guardians of the Galaxy (1974)

Maybe it was that Cantinflas trailer before the movie, but ever since seeing Guardians of the Galaxy last week, I’ve had this insane urge to remake it into a low-budget ‘70s film with gloriously crappy special effects, hokey raccoon make-up and tree suits, and no CGI, if only to see masked Mexican wrestling legend El Santo was Drax.

Then my wife and I got on a roll, and we started casting the entire thing. So, in keeping with my Films That Never Were books, imagine the spectacle that might have been Martin Scorsese’s 1974 version of Guardians of the Galaxy:

Gary Busey as Peter Quill

Raquel Welch as Gamora

Al Pacino as Rocket Raccoon

Robert DeNiro as Groot

Cybill Shepherd as Nebula

Elliott Gould as Corpsman Dey

Ellen Burstyn as Nova Prime

James Coburn as Yondu

Lee Marvin as Thanos

El Santo as Drax

and

Marlon Brando as The Collector

Who did we miss?
